More Than 100 Merchants
It's easy to see why The Wilcox Emporium Warehouse is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. One stop offers visitors the diversity of more than 100 merchants, The Appalachian Cultural Museum, and a food court. The Emporium opened for business August 1, 1996, but the building's history has deep roots in the culture and heritage of North Carolina's High Country.
Charm and Character
This 60,000 square foot facility, now filled with art, antiques, collectables, pottery and countless other treasures, was once the home of Wilcox Drug Company and Wilcox Natural Products. Walking into this building is like taking a trip back in time.
Strolling across the hardwood floors recalls a time when mountaineers relied on the land around them for all of their daily necessities. The beautiful Appalachian Mountains provided pioneers with much more than healing herbs. Basket makers, potters, weavers, furniture makers and other craftspeople skillfully transformed natural materials into utilitarian and decorative objects. One generation after another contributed to a tradition of pride in craftsmanship, and today the Wilcox Emporium is proud to be a part of that continuing tradition.
Original art and handcrafted items are offered by over 100 of the Emporium's merchants. Take a trip back in time with Antique merchants displaying the finest in furniture, jewelry, glassware and much more. The 1997 Fall issue of Better Homes and Gardens Crafts Showcase magazine focused on the Emporium & twenty one of its outstanding self-producing merchants in a feature article on Appalachian crafters. Each week the Emporium's High Country Artist Showcase Series turns a spotlight on one or more of its distinctive
merchants to highlight their unique talents and products with special demonstrations and exhibits. Each vendor is carefully selected, and all products are juried to preserve a high standard of quality and variety among the products offered. Participating merchants chose from an assortment of showcases, wall space, vignettes, and featured retail shops that will accommodate most any item. The Wilcox Emporium is rapidly becoming one of the highest volume per-square-foot shopping facilities in North Carolina, and it is always pleased to welcome enthusiastic new members to its family.
Every visit to the Wilcox Emporium Warehouse is a special occasion. There is always something new to see and explore. Enticing sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and textures meld together to create an unforgettable atmosphere that is a feast for the senses. As visitors indulge their eyes on the many remarkable displays, they can follow their noses to some delicious treats. Gourmet Teas, chocolates, jams and jellies are just a few of the scrumptious delights available throughout the building. Even the most discriminating taste buds will find satisfaction at the Emporium's restaurants.
